  Ses descendants ont retrouvé, au milieu de vieux souvenirs, le journal de guerre de Joseph Broch, écrit de façon quasi quotidienne du 28 juillet 1914 au 14 juillet 1915 ainsi que sa correspondance, prémisse de son union avec Fernande. Une année qui l’a vu quitter Villefranche sur mer, « la fleur au fusil », comme il est coutume de dire, pour remonter en quelques jours vers l’enfer du front de l’Est., où le début de la guerre fut un véritable désastre pour l’armée française. Ce journal nous fait vivre le quotidien de cette troupe du midi qui va quitter son paradis azuréen avec « l’amour de la Patrie » chevillé au corps, pour se retrouver finalement, on pourrait presque dire, pour les plus chanceux, à l’hôpital et au stalag allemand durant quatre longues années. Gravement blessé, mais sans perdre l’espoir en la victoire, il nous fait partager ses peurs, son patriotisme, la camaraderie des soldats, et même quelques bons repas aux grandes occasions, avec parfois poésie et humour.
